Match the spring layout before the load label

Double-eye springs and single-eye or slipper springs connect to the trailer differently. Record the end style, spring width, eye or bushing diameter and the manufacturer's measurement method. A worn spring measured under load may not match the replacement's stated unloaded dimensions.

Compare the connections around the spring

  • Leaf springs: eye-to-eye or eye-to-slipper measurement, width, leaf count and the documented rating for one spring.
  • Equalizers: hole-center spacing, height, hole diameters and the suspension layout. Matching axle spacing alone is insufficient.
  • Hangers and shackles: hole centers, frame attachment and bolt/bushing arrangement; overall length is different from hole-center distance.
  • U-bolts and bushings: axle shape, inside width, usable length, thread and bushing dimensions.
  • Air suspension: confirm the exact air spring or shock identifier. A spacer, bracket or fitting is a separate component, not a complete air spring.

Do not increase the trailer rating by changing a spring

The trailer's approved load depends on more than its springs. Keep the axle, frame, wheels, tires and suspension within the manufacturer's limits. Use the service procedure for supporting the trailer and replacing suspension components.

Suspension buying questions

Is a spring capacity the same as an axle rating?

No. Check whether the number describes one spring, a pair or an axle application. Do not combine ratings without the manufacturer's suspension information.

Can I measure an old spring while the trailer is loaded?

Record how it was measured, then compare with the manufacturer's stated method. Loading and wear can change the observed shape and length.

Can a different equalizer fit if its end holes match?

Also check center-hole position, height, bushings and the full suspension geometry. Confirm the replacement in the suspension documentation.
