Separate lifting, supporting and stabilizing
A lift rating describes a different duty from a static support rating. A stabilizer is not automatically a lifting jack. Compare the manufacturer's permitted use with the tongue or supported load, rather than choosing from the trailer's total gross weight alone.
Check the jack's working envelope
- A-frame jacks: mounting pattern, tube clearance, retracted height and handle clearance around the coupler.
- Weld-on and swing-up jacks: bracket arrangement, permitted frame attachment, pivot clearance and travel position.
- Droplegs, feet and caster wheels: tube shape and size, attachment method and the accessory's own rating. Confirm whether the accessory is included.
- Electric jacks: documented supply, wiring requirements and manual operation provision, as well as mounting and travel.
- Landing-gear repairs: exact assembly series, driven versus non-driven leg, shaft connections and gear identifiers.
Compare travel using the same definition
Screw travel, dropleg adjustment and total lift may be listed separately. Do not treat a maximum-lift figure as a retracted dimension. Confirm the geometry needed to connect the tow vehicle and the clearance needed for travel.
Jack and landing-gear questions
Can I use the larger support number for lifting?
Use the stated lift rating for lifting. A separate support rating does not increase the permitted lift load.
Does a jack include a foot or wheel?
Check the contents for that listing. Some jacks have an integrated foot or wheel; others list those accessories separately.
Is a replacement gear universal across landing gear?
No. Match the assembly series and manufacturer identifier, including tooth count and shaft interface where documented.
